Seyi Makinde is the 28th executive governor of Oyo State, Nigeria. He is not only a well-liked politician but also a successful businessman with engineering training in fluid and gas metering.

Seyi also served as Makon Group Limited’s previous group managing director.

Seyi Makinde Early Life

Seyi Makinde was born on December 25, 1967, in Oja’ba, Ibadan, to the late Pa Olatunbosun Makinde and Madam Abigail Makinde.

His father was a well-liked educator who eventually went into accounting. The family’s third child is Seyi Makinde.

Seyi received his elementary schooling at Yemetu, Ibadan’s St. Paul Elementary School and St. Michael Primary School.

He then continued to Bishop Phillips Academy Monatan in Ibadan to complete his secondary studies. In 1985, Seyi Makinde was admitted to the University of Lagos (Unilag). He graduated with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from there.

Seyi Makinde Professional Career

Seyi Makinde, a young guy seeking education, registered for a Safety Shutdown System training course at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas.

Additionally, he received training in 1999 at Pan-Atlantic University (previously Lagos Business School) on the Development of Analytical Competence for Managing Operations.

In addition to this, Seyi Makinde received training in automation in 2000. Later, in 2002, he attended the Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, England, to study the fundamentals of crude sampling.

In 2005, he also completed coursework at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he studied Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems.

Seyi worked for the Nigerian Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in 1990 as a corp member. He started as an apprentice engineer and later worked in different positions. He stayed until 1992.

Seyi Makinde then relocated to Rebold International Limited, where he was employed as a field engineer (Eket Operations).

He then became the business’s, Field Manager.

According to reports, Seyi’s youth empowerment program helped Oyo natives by providing them with over 5000 jobs.

Seyi Makinde created Makon Engineering and Technical Services, an organization that provides instrumentation, automation, and control systems, at the age of 29 after spending five years working with multinational corporations. He served as the business’s Group Managing Director until August 2018.

The company, now known as Makon Group, has branch offices in South Africa and the USA as well as four subsidiaries in Nigeria.

Political Career

Seyi ran for the Oyo South senatorial seat in 2007 as a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), but Kamoru Adedibu of the People’s Democratic Party defeated him.

He lost the race for the Oyo South Senate seat in 2010 again, although this time it was to the People’s Democratic Party.

Seyi was a determined man, thus the failure did not deter him. Instead, he viewed it as a challenge and returned stronger.

Seyi made the audacious decision to run for governor of Oyo State in 2015 on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. However, he was rejected from the nomination ticket during the party’s primary election.

Seyi Makinde, on the other hand, abided by the adage that failure is only an opportunity to start over more sensibly. He decided to leave PDP to run for governor under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2015. but it ultimately failed.

The interim national chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, visited Seyi Makinde in September 2017. To make a long tale short, Seyi rejoined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after numerous interventions.

After winning the primary poll with 2772 votes, Makinde was selected as the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for governor in the 2019 general elections in Oyo State.

In 2019, Seyi Makinde’s aspiration of becoming the governor of Oyo State was realized. Ultimately, on March 9, 2019, at the Oyo State gubernatorial elections, He was chosen to fill the position of governor of that state.

With 157,639 votes, he defeated Mr Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

On May 29, 2019, he was sworn in to succeed Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, who had served in the position for eight years.
