WhatsApp group admin sued for ejecting member without consent

A WhatsApp group admin was sued by a member identified as Herbert Baitwababo after ejecting him from the page without his consent.

According to reports, the plaintiff,  Herbert Baitwababo sued the admins of the ‘Buyanja My Roots’ WhatsApp group for removing him from the group page after he raised questions about their finances.

After the issue was sent to court, Senior Grade One Magistrate at Makindye Magistrate’s Court, Mr. Igga Adiru, ordered the group admin, group administrator of the WhatsApp group, Allan Asinguza, to re-add the plaintiff back to the back.

According to the judge, ejecting a member of a page without their consent is against his freedom of association.

The plaintiff, Mr Baitwababo highlighted in his application that the WhatsApp group was initially created by Mr.. Asinguza for people from Buyanja Sub-county, with the sole aim of social contributions towards charity works, condolences, and support for calamity victims; and required a subscription fee of Shs30,000 to register as a member.
